But wait…your headphones aren’t producing any sound or the bare minimum, to say the least.

Relax and take a big breath; we’ve got you covered on this front. In this guide, we’ll show you some simple yet efficient ways on how to make your headphone louder.

Making headphones louder can sound a little daunting. But it really isn’t. Take a look at these simple ways to turn up the volume on your headphones.

1. Clean Your Headphones

An easily overlooked issue that many face is one of the most straightforward solutions, which is to clean your headphones. Your headphones may be giving you a poor sound because the wire or cloth mesh screen has collected debris such as oil, dust, or wax.

If that’s the case, then you’ll need:

  • Soapy water
  • Hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or tech wipe
  • A soft cloth or q-tip
  • A dry toothbrush or cleaning brush
  • Paper towels

Cleaning headphones:

  • Firstly, remove the ear pads. Take a slightly damp cloth that’s been dipped in soapy water and wipe down the exterior. Use a paper towel to dry off your headphones.
  • Dampen the cloth with rubbing alcohol or tech wipe and use it to clean the ear pads. Then clean the nooks and hard-to-reach areas with a q-tip soaked in rubbing alcohol.
  • Use your cloth with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide to gently wipe the mesh, killing any bacteria and dislodging any debris.
  • Lastly, let your earpad airdry and reinstall them to your headphones.

Cleaning ear tips & buds:

Eartips are in an area that’s in contact with the skin, which quickly accumulates oils and wax. Take a look at how to make your earphones louder by cleaning the ear tips and buds.

  • First, remove the ear tips & soak them in warm soapy water
  • Next, use a q-tip to clean the inner part of the ear tip. Clean the tips using hydrogen peroxide and wipe them with a damp cloth
  • Next, wipe down the mesh part of your earbud with hydrogen peroxide
  • Lastly, dry them, assemble, and you’re good to go

Note: Remember not to soak your headphones and use dry paper towels after cleaning.

2. Adjust the Volume Settings On Your Device

More often than not, and without even noticing it, the settings of your device or open-back headset can easily change. This may sound like a no-brainer and a common mistake. The first thing you should do is to check your device’s settings and see if there was a change.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as adjusting the volume limit on your device. Keep in mind, when headphones are connected, they will have their own volume settings. So, if your device’s volume is at its max, but the output is still quiet, you should check the volume setting on the headphones themselves.

Moreover, different devices have different volume settings and adjustments. Interference on your device, whether it’s a Mac or Windows, can change the output of your headphones. Using a phone – Android or iPhone – to listen to movies, videos, or music may have an in-depth or advanced volume setting compared to a PC.

Take a look at how to get to these settings and a step-by-step guide to achieve your desired volume.

iPhone

How to make headphones louder on iPhone you can:

  1. Go to Settings on your device & select music
  2. Scroll down to get to the playback header
  3. Select the ‘volume level’
  4. Adjust the volume limit to the ‘normal’ or ‘loud’ option.

Android

  1.  Go to Settings on your device & select the sound part
  2. Tap on the media setting and adjust your volume to a sound you’re comfortable with

Windows

Take a look at different ways you can adjust your volume for Windows:

  • If you’re using the latest version of Microsoft Windows on your device, then you should take a look at the notification bar. You’ll find a speaker’s symbol, select it and adjust the volume of your headphones.
  • In addition, you’ll find there are keys on your keyboard that allow you to manually adjust the volume settings. Check if there is a speaker symbol on your keyboard with an add and reduce sign.
  • There are other settings on the Windows control panel that can help you adjust the volume in different apps. Once you’re in the Windows control panel, select ‘hardware and sounds.’ You should see an ‘adjust system sound’ tab, select it and adjust your volume.

3. Get a Headphone Amplifier

If you’ve checked all your headphones and device settings, it could be an issue with the power output of your headphones. If you have a pair of headphones and you don’t want to replace them despite their low output of volume, you can get a headphone amplifier to help improve the sound.

Remember, headphones are simply speakers, and all speakers require an amplifier. The smaller the headset, the limiting the volume output. Contrarily, the bigger the amp, the better the sound and volume. If you have a pair of headphones that aren’t powerful enough, your sound quality and loudness will suffer as a result. Moreover, setting your headphones at ‘max’ volume may give you that awful distorted sound.

With a standalone amplifier, you’ll receive a better sound. The only issue here is, not all headphones work with amplifiers, and most amplifiers work with high-quality over-ear headphones. You would need to first check the headphone’s impedance to see if it’s compatible with an amplifier.

In addition, you would need to ensure the amplifier and your headphone’s size are the right fit.

4. Install a Headphone Booster App

Using a volume-boosting app is another means of boosting your headphone output. Whether you’re using iPhone, Windows, or Android, there are a number of volume-boosting apps to give you a louder sound from your device.

Take a look at some of the best volume boosting apps for each operating system:

Android:

  • Volume Booster by GOODEV
  • Dub Music Player – Audio Player & Music Equalizer
  • Volume Booster Pro
  • Equalizer FX

iPhone:

  • Equalizer Pro Volume Booster
  • Max Volume Booster.
  • Boom Music
  • Equalizer + (Music Player Volume Quality Booster)

Windows:

  • Equalizer Pro
  • Breakaway Audio Enhancer
  • Boom 3D
  • Viper4Windows

5. Disable Volume Limitations

Many devices have a volume limit that manufacturers set. There is a workaround in many devices that allows users to bypass the limit for volume. This is so that the user doesn’t ‘overdo’ it in terms of super high output sounds and ends up with damaged hearing and distorted sound.

On devices such as iPhones, there is a setting named ‘volume limit.’ If you open the setting, you’ll be able to choose how limited you want the volume to be. You can ‘shut off’ the volume limiter and use the slider to determine how much output of sound you want.

In Android devices, you can select the ‘sounds and vibrations section.’ Select ‘volume’ and in the upper right corner of the screen, tap ‘media volume limiter.’ If the limiter is off, you can select the slider next to ‘off’ and turn the limiter on. Once it’s on, you can then select ‘custom volume limit’ to your preferred output.

On Windows devices, you can follow some simple steps on how to set a max limit

Note: There are also many EQ settings for devices that can help boost the volume.

6. Get a Pair of Sound Isolation Headphones

If you don’t have these already and your headphones are still not giving your that oomph. It won’t really matter how much more you fiddle with them; maybe you should just think of getting yourself a new pair of sound-isolating headphones.

With these types of headphones, you won’t have to crank up the volume super high, yet you’ll still receive the same immersive listening experience.

Moreover, with sound isolating headphones, you’ll run less of a risk of damaging your hearing as you won’t be listening to such high volumes or distorted sounds.

Whether you’re looking to crank up the volume on your gaming headsets to jam out a game with your fellow teammates or if you’re looking to put on a pair of ASMR headphones to relax.

To hear chosen sounds and vibrations, everyone needs a good, quality pair of headphones. When your headphones aren’t working, they can make you feel frustrated and lower your productivity as a result. Before buying your headphones, you should make sure you find a pair that has a good output of volume.

From volume-boosting Apps to disabling sound limits, there are plenty of ways on how to make headset louder. If you have a pair of quality-sounding headphones, what are they? Please share, we’d love to know.

As a reminder: Take note when altering increased volume settings. Eardrums are fragile and you can damage them by listening to high volumes of sounds.
